Project: Lima School Playground,
Lima, Peru.

This is an example of a very small project in which an individual initiative is supported, to the benefit of local children.

The Play Space:

The space is a public school playground in Lima, Peru, identified by a Peruvian-Canadian member of Child Play International All of the students come from a poor area, and many of them from a nearby orphanage. The playground was simply a fenced, asphalted terrain, with no play equipment except one small set of swings. The CPI member thought that a modest and gradual investment could make this space friendlier and more educational.

The specialists:

The CPI member gained the support of teachers and the school psychologist for his proposed methods of enlivening this playground.

Play Materials:

The Child Play International member began with very inexpensive resources: with the help of a volunteer he painted children's games on the asphalt -- for example hopscotch, and a game popular in Quebec called "Quatre Coins". He taught these games to local adults and children.

With local help he also put up one tetherball game (requiring simply a post and the ball fastened to a rope) and a volleyball game, requiring only the net and ball, and a basketball net. These items can be put away at night to avoid theft.

Having kept in contact with the school and learned that all these games were being heavily used, the Child Play International member made a second visit in May-June of 2002, together with a group of student volunteers from Le Petit Sdminaire de Qudbec. . They took with them six more tetherballs (this having been reported to be the most popular game) and also a badminton net with racquets and birds, and a variety of other materials for outdoor play. They also took some materials in an unfinished state to show local adults and children to make them into interesting play equipment. This project was highly successful in mobilizing the children, and another visit is planned for. February 2003.
